Neuromodulation is Another Option

There’s another option available for when traditional therapies fail to relieve chronic pelvic pain. Spinal Cord Stimulation––a type of neuromodulation–– is a procedure that involves placing small metal wires near the epidural space, the outermost part of the spinal canal. The wires are connected to a power source, called a neurostimulator, which generates electrical pulses that alter nerve activity in certain sites of the body. Though large-scale studies on its effectiveness have not yet been done, many have found the procedure to be successful in treating back pain and complex regional pain syndrome, and evidence is showing it may be successful in reducing pelvic pain as well.
