Botox Expanding To New Treatments

Botox Expanding To New Treatments

Thumb upOn April 20th, 2015 Actavis announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an expansion for Botox for the treatment of adults with upper limb spasticity. The new additions include two thumb muscles. One is the flexor pollicis longus which is a muscle in the forearm that flexes the thumb. The other is an adductor pollicis which is a muscle in the hand that moves the thumb. They increased the maximum dose from 360 units to 400 units for the upper limb. The last approval that expanded this therapy was in 2010.

Botox is the only FDA approved neurotoxin for the treatment of upper limb spasticity. Spasticity is a neurological condition which makes your muscles stiffen. When that happens it makes your body parts stiff such as your elbow, wrist, fingers and thumb. Simple task such as just washing your hands or getting dressed can be difficult.
